Mat describes his approach to legal recruiting as thoroughly engaged. In doing so, it’s obvious that he understands that the legal profession is different from other industries. Changes are less systemic; moves far less frequent; and law firms are more professional partnership than employer-employee relationship.
Because of those dynamics, Mat takes a highly consultative and judicious approach to recruiting attorneys. As a former attorney himself, he’s walked in the shoes of candidates and listens carefully to the real interests of clients searching for an Associate, a Senior Partner, an entire practice group, or in-house Counsel. Throughout, Mat knows that clients and candidates need reliable and insightful information, a consultative partner, and candid feedback.
They must also trust what they hear. Attorneys are a highly intelligent and discerning audience. But while they invest considerable intellect on behalf of clients, they pay far less attention to their own careers. Mat plays an important role in correcting that imbalance. They need someone they can talk to honestly; float ideas to; and ask for advice from on potential hires or career moves. Mat’s ability to listen to their concerns and objectives enhances his insight and effectiveness. His knowledge of the legal marketplace and advice on issues like changing firms makes him an excellent consultant to his clients and candidates.
Smart counsel works, and Mat provides valuable information and thoughtful advice to his Chicago area clients. The concentration of businesses and law firms in the Loop area gives the Chicago legal market a unique dynamic. He learned in his own legal career that lives and professional careers continually cross. As such, it’s imperative that he recruits based upon that inter-connectivity. He knows who’s worked with whom; who’s sued whom; and who respects whom. His knowledge of local nuance and national trends makes Mat an invaluable partner for any firm, company, or candidate looking for a change.
Mat received his BA from Colorado College and his JD from the University of Iowa College of Law. He worked his way through college at Colorado College operating the famous Zamboni ice re-surfacing machine. With a more professional profile now, Mat spends his free time reading great books, cooking for family and friends, and keeping up with his two young sons.
