Finally, you realize the bed itself is causing the discomfort, so you click over to a website and order a new mattress.
Even before you click “Place Order,” there’s so much happening behind the scenes to ensure that your mattress gets delivered on schedule. The sophistication of contacting the company, working with logistics providers, setting up delivery – it all plays a role in bringing customer satisfaction.
One of my clients is an online luxury mattress retailer. They’ve grown from startup to more than $130 million in revenue in just three years. Since this client is an e-commerce retailer, they outsource the actual mattress manufacturing. They need high-energy, thoughtful workers that love to solve problems creatively. For this particular client, just about everyone working there is 23 to 30 years old. These millennials embrace the creative opportunities this industry provides.
Some may say, “It’s just manufacturing!” However, my client understands it’s a lot more sophisticated than that. Finding the right people who share a true passion for disruptive change in the manufacturing industry is critical.
Bridging a 2 Million Person Talent Gap: Why Now is an Exciting Time to Be a Manufacturing Recruiter
Currently, the manufacturing industry is facing a crippling talent shortage. Up to two million jobs are expected to remain unfilled over the next decade. While some may look at that as a challenge, I view it as an opportunity. That void needs to be filled, which makes a manufacturing recruiter an exciting role.
Take the person I just hired. He’s 28 years old, has his master’s degree, and was a top performer in a major retail store. He managed logistics at the store and wanted to pivot his career. He did a lot of research in supply chain, logistics, and manufacturing, and he was particularly interested in becoming a recruiter because of what he learned.
That’s part of the opportunity for the role: educating others that the industry is far more than rote work on an assembly line. There’s the ability to use AI and machine learning, advance your career and education quickly, and getting to branch out into other areas like supply chain and logistics. I’m thrilled for the journey ahead.
